Chaïbia was born in a small village in Morocco. Married at the age of 13, by the age of 15, she was a widow with a small son. As a self-taught artist, she was known for breaking boundaries, and her work has generally been classified as “outsider” or naïve art. She was the subject of a 2015 Moroccan biographical film, and her work continues to have a large market in Morocco and Europe.
