Juan Sánchez is an important Nuyorican artist and educator who rose to prominence in the 1980s for large multi-layered mixed media collage paintings addressing issues of Puerto Rican identity and the struggle against U.S. colonialism. Since then, his work has evolved to embrace photography, printmaking, and video while continuing to investigate race and class, cultural identity, equality, social justice, and self-determination. He is an influential member of the Hunter College art faculty.
