Syd Carpenter is a sculptor and professor of art, art history, and Black studies at Swarthmore College. She earned a BFA and MFA from Tyler School of Art and Architecture at Temple University, Philadelphia. Her sculptural work engages the cultivation of the land whether by referencing natural growth and productivity in its subject matter, drawing on family histories of farming, or by being formed from clay--earth itself.
Carpenter’s work is in the collections of the Fuller Craft Museum, Brockton, MA; Philadelphia Museum of Art; Renwick Gallery of the Smithsonian American Art Museum, Washington, DC; and Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, Philadelphia, among other institutions.
