Kawabata's signature technique is embedding pieces of glass in the porcelain clay, which upon firing, melt and merge with the glazes in unexpected ways. Kawabata likens his vessels to human bodies, stating that the colored transparent parts imply passages between the internal world and the external world. The body and memory are enduring themes in his work; the folds and pleats on this tea bowl stem from his childhood habit of pinching and folding the edges of soft materials. He also frequently leaves his fingerprints in the clay.
