The text below the image identifies this man as Alfred Cadart, who helped to spur a renewal of interest in etching among French artists. In 1862 he founded the Société des aquafortistes, or Society of Etchers which is identified beneath his portrait.

At the lower left, below the image, in Latin: "M. Desboutin. del[ineavit]. et sc[ulpsit]," or "M. Desboutin drew and engraved this." At the lower right, it reads: "Vve. A. Cadart, Edit. Imp. 56, Bd Haussmann. Paris." Beneath, "M. Alfred Cadart / Foundatour de la société des Aqua fortistes"
