In this painting, the body of the reclining Buddha emerges from a rocky surround, which in turn melts into clouds, mist, or water. In contrast to the still-as-stone Buddha, the three birds in mid-flight provide a sense of movement and liveliness. Here, the artist based the figure on the colossal rock-cut relief of the Buddha's parinirvana (the death or final entry into nirvana) at Baoding Mountain in Dazu, Chongqing, dating to the Southern Song dynasty (1127-1279).
