This engraving features a 1st century Roman marble sculpture known as Marforio, an image of a reclining bearded god. This figure has been identified as a personification of a river, likely the Tiber, or a Roman god such as Oceanus, Neptune, or Jupiter. The statue can still be seen today in the Palazzo Nuovo, integrated into a fountain designed by Giacomo della Porta.
