Delacroix designed this lithograph shortly after his return from Morocco, where he had accompanied a diplomatic mission. While it is closely related to his 1833 painting of the same subject in the Musée du Louvre, the lithograph was never published during the artist’s lifetime. After his death, the stone was purchased by the Gazette des Beaux-Arts, which printed it.

Beneath the image, the printer is identified at lower right ("Imp[rimerie] Bertauts").
