Zwe Yan Naing lived as a Buddhist monk for a decade before attending the State School of Fine Art in Yangon. His work reflects his Buddhist Rakhine background as well as his political inclinations, often considered the most outwardly political artist in Myanmar. This work is from a series made out of decommissioned bank notes that he bought back from the national bank. Featuring the likeness of the late General Aung San (father of modern day politician Aung San Suu Kyi) a hero of Myanmar’s independence, the bills are cut up by the artist and recombined into Pop portraits.
