At the center of this small panel, Christ is shown tied to a tall, slender column, with a cruciform halo framing his head. Flanking him, two torturers each lift a weapon called a scourge (Latin: flagellum) comprised of leather thongs attached to a handle. In contrast to the imminent violence, their bodies are posed with dancer-like grace poses against the gilded background.
The Flagellation was a gift to Berea College from the Kress Foundation. It was originally part of a larger ensemble depicting scenes from the Passion of Christ; four other panels of similar dimensions are today in the Gemäldegalerie in Berlin.
