This panel, and the adjacent painting depicting Saint Anthony Abbot, were likely the work of multiple artists, and may have originally formed part of two separate polyptychs, or multi-part altarpieces.
The Apostle St. Andrew is shown holding a book and a cross turned sideways. He was believed to have been crucified on a cross turned sideways at his own request, as he did not consider himself fit to be crucified in the same manner as Jesus Christ.
This painting was part of the group of works donated by the Samuel H. Kress Foundation to the Museum of Art, Science and Industry in Bridgeport, CT in 1962. When that museum became the Discovery Museum in the early 1990's, the Kress paintings were transferred to Fairfield University, where they formed the core of what would become the Fairfield University Art Museum.
