This roundel is a modern plaster cast after the 15th century marble original that forms part of the tomb monument of San Bartolo in the church of Sant’Agostino in San Gimignano. Viewed from below in its original context, the Madonna's benevolent gaze would have fallen upon those standing or kneeling in the chapel. The artist, Benedetto da Maiano was one of the most prominent sculptors of 15th-century Florence.
