While it may seem incongruous to find the founder of the Franciscan order on a Jesuit campus, the hooded and slightly stooped figure of Saint Francis feeding the birds has been a familiar sight on Fairfield’s campus for many years. On long-term loan from a private collector, the sculpture formerly stood on the plaza in front of the Egan Chapel before finding a new home near the Egan School of Nursing. Sculpted in bronze, the sculpture depicts the gently curving form of Francis’ body as he gazes contemplatively at a bird that has perched on his outstretched left hand; other birds gather attentively around his feet.
