The stag has been the mascot of Fairfield University since 1948. At that time the university formed part of the Diocese of Hartford--“hart” is another word for stag, and “ford” is another word for “stream”-- so the seal of the new Fairfield University became a stag crossing a stream.
This monumental sculpture of the Fairfield stag was designed by J. C. Dye, a sculptor known for large-scale bronze sculptures of horses and wildlife inspired by his background as a working rancher and outdoorsman. The stag’s powerful body is depicted with a striking level of naturalism; its raised front leg gives the illusion of sudden movement.
