Originally printed in 1830 as part of Various Subjects of Landscape, Characteristic of English Scenery (London: 1830-1832). In 1829, the landscape painter John Constable began collaborating with the engraver David Lucas to reproduce his paintings and oil sketches. Constable and Lucas chose to work with mezzotint, an intaglio technique in which the engraver alternately roughens and polishes areas of the plate to produce a range of lush, velvety black tones that could be mistaken for charcoal drawing.
