One the major advantages of color lithography was its adaptability to all segments of the consumer market, from cheap advertisements to deluxe illustrated volumes like this French translation of Jacopo de Voragine's The Golden Legend, a 13th-century collection of tales of Christian saints. The text was accompanied by 75 lithographs by Lunois, and was framed by 75 woodcut borders designed by the artist. The volume came enclosed in a special folder, with an embossed seal bearing the motto carpe dilecta, or “seize prized things.”
