This Synchromist painting is based on the biblical verse Matthew 2:13-23. Another more abstract version of this subject by Daughterty is in the Allentown Art Museum. This painting, along with 2021.20.02 were created just after the end of World War I, when Daugherty became deeply interested in portraying biblical subjects.
