This painting is a 19th-century copy of a 17th-century work by the Italian painter Guido Reni, which you can see in the additional images down below. Its surface is very damaged and stained. The square patches you see are areas that were test-cleaned by a local art restorer, removing a century’s worth of grime, smoke, and yellowed varnish. The painting forms part of the museum’s Teaching Collection, helping Fairfield University students learn about painting materials and conservation.
