This translates to "In his annals the name of a Bayard, abbot, who was probably related to one of our most illustrious knights. With this immortal name we regret to see the name of the last descendant of the Merovée race. The chronicle of Fontenelle teaches us in a few lines that the heir to the Franks ended his days there under the hair shirt, and these lines granted with regret to a fallen prince do not contain the least secret of history, not the slightest homage of feeling, that testifies to regret, or recommitment or hope. The king was not a dead king. The dynasty had just changed."
